    Tech for Carers 101

A Beginner's Guide to Using Technology in Family Care

Because you don't need to be tech-savvy to make life a little easier.

Whether you're caring for a parent, partner, sibling, or friend β€” you're already doing one of the most complex, emotional, and essential jobs out there. And while tech can't take away the tough stuff, it can make it more manageable.

This guide is for carers who don't consider themselves "techy," but are open to tools that can lighten the load β€” without making life harder.

    Let's get started.

    🧭

    1. Use What You Already Know

You don't need fancy equipment. If you already use:

WhatsApp or text to stay in touch

    Google Calendar to track appointments

Phone notes or sticky notes to remember tasks

…congratulations! You're already using tech in care. The key is to bring more intention to it.

    Start here:

Create a shared WhatsApp group for your care circle or sync a calendar to keep everyone in the loop.

    2. Involve Your Loved One Gently

Sometimes the person you're caring for resists change. Maybe they're afraid of technology. Maybe they feel like it's "too late" to learn.

    Here's what you can say:

"This isn't about replacing me β€” it's about making things easier for both of us."

"Let's try it once and see how it feels. If it doesn't work, we'll stop."

Start small. Go slow. Celebrate little wins β€” even just opening an app.

    3. Choose Tech That's Simple and Familiar

    Look for tools that:

Work in places you already use (like WhatsApp)

Don't require logins or complex setup

Offer voice or visual options for accessibility

For example, Nurtura works right inside WhatsApp β€” so there's no need to learn something new. It just shows up with gentle nudges, check-ins, and care coordination when you need it.

    🧩

    4. Solve One Problem at a Time

Don't try to "digitise" everything overnight. Instead, ask:

"What's one thing that's currently causing stress?"

Then find a tool that solves just that:

    πŸ’Š

    Forgetting meds

    β†’ try a reminder app

    Losing track of appointments

    β†’ shared calendar

    Feeling emotionally isolated

β†’ AI check-ins via voice or message

Start with one thing. Build from there.

    🧠

    5. Ask for Help (You're Not Alone)

Let a grandkid, friend, or neighbour walk you through setup. Or ask the company β€” many (like us!) love supporting first-time users.

You're not behind β€” you're just learning something new.

And there's no shame in asking.

    6. Remember: The Best Tech Is the Kind You'll Actually Use

Forget the latest gadgets. The right tools are the ones that make your life easier, not harder.

    That might mean:

    πŸ”Š

Practice using a simple voice assistant like Alexa or Google Home

Using video calls to stay connected across distance

Letting an app like Nurtura track care tasks and send reminders so you don't have to

Tech Can't Replace You β€” But It Can Support You

Caring is deeply human. No screen or software can replace your love, patience, or presence.

    But the right tech can:

    Free up your brain
    Reduce stress and mental load
Help your family stay more connected and informed
Remind your loved one to take their meds, drink water, or simply feel seen

And some days, that's enough to make a real difference.
